1953-1954
production of 3955. A fiberglass body which at the time was considered
the new wonder material and cut the tooling costs for Chevrolet. Only
315 were delivered in 1953 to a very select clientele. The
first full year of production Chevy only sold 3640, with 1500 units leftover.
The handling left alot to be desired, and it was only good for a top speed
of 107 mph and 0-60 in 11 seconds.
1955
production of 674. We saw some improvements in this model year. A 4.3 liter
V8 with a three speed transmission was offered as an option, and some suspension
modifications resulted in a better handling car. Performance was slightly
improved with 0-60 in 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 119 mph.
1956-1957
production of 9806. The same basic chassis with some further refinements
which improved steering and handling. Increased power options which brought
0-60 down to 5.7 seconds and the car could top 135 mph. A completely restyled
body. Beginning in 1957 you could get a 4 speed transmission and a competition
package with suspension and braking options.
1958-1960
production of 29,099. Some performance options were integrated
into the basice version of the corvette, while others remained as options.
Additional chrome and lights were minor styling changes. In 1960 the basic
chassis of the 1953 was given a few more mods.
1961-1962
production of 25,470. No change in the basic chassis or engine options,
but this one had an updated styling change. Top speed remained at about
135 mph.
Sting
Ray 1963-1967 production of 117,964.
A completely new car in styling, shorter wheelbase, rear suspension, improved
brakes, (still drum until 1965 when all wheel disc brakes bacame
an option. A stunning car whether in coupe or roadster. Only 1963 had the
split window feature. Several engine options were offered. A seven liter
version had a top speed of 140 mph would do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. Only 20
cars were fitted with that engine.
Stingray
1968-1977 production of 339,651. The newest version offered disc brakes
as standard, wheels were wider, and a 3 speed automatic replaced the old
2 speed. The car length increased by 7 inches even though the wheelbase
remained the same. Integrated bumpers satisfied the new U S laws going
into effect at the time. This model was plagued by poor workmanship.
